Mission # 0369
Name: Chris Murphy
Branch: U.S. Marine Corps
Dates of Service: 1998-2014 (Medical Retirement)
MOS/Job code: Infantry, Platoon Sgt
Jan of 98, Chris was standing in front of a judge. The choice was Marine Corps or jail.
Chris served with the 26th MEU in Albania, Kosovo, and Greece. In 1999, Turkey would suffer an earthquake and the MEU would be on site to assist in the casualty assistance.
In 2001 Chris would serve with 3/8 and find himself at the Embassy in Kabul in December 2001.
He would return home and be reassigned to 2/8 and during his time on leave find out he was heading to prepare for Iraq. It was during this time that Chris would find himself in several serious firefights. One skirmish would leave Chris with an amazing story of survival. Heavy fire and 155MM artillery left his force dazed. Chris stood up in the rear of the truck and took 3 rounds to the chest. Fortunately for Chris, those rounds impacted the small arms rifle plate in the front of his vest, saving his life! In those early days of OIF, U.S. forces were short on critical supplies, including body armor plates. Many of Chris’s Marines only had one plate and they wore them in the front side of their vests… fortunately Chris had one.
Chris would continue to serve in the Marine Corps in various positions including training instructor, MARSOC, and eventually ending up at 3/7.
The tolls of a decade on the move would finally take its toll. Chris’s behavior was off and he found himself in situations that we now know are indicative of TBI. Chris would eventually be Medically retired, removing him from his tribe and placing him into the civilian world. At 312 pounds, and multiple jobs later Chris finally sought help. He attended Camp Southern Ground’s Warrior Pathh program, quit drinking and found his purpose, working with fellow warriors in finding their peace.
These days you can find Chris working on the CSG campus assisting his new tribe every week. Chris is now below 200 pounds and sober, a cigar aficionado, and has found himself and his new mission!
